First, the dentist will numb the tooth and surrounding area with a local anesthetic.

Next, a rubber dam (a sheet of rubber that isolates the tooth) will be placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free from saliva during the procedure.

An opening will be made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals (the small, thin channels that run through the center of the tooth's roots).

Using small instruments called files, the dentist will remove the damaged or infected pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals.

Once all the pulp has been removed, the root canals will be cleaned and disinfected to remove any bacteria or debris.

The root canals will then be filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.

Lastly, the tooth will be sealed with a filling or a crown to protect it and restore its shape and function.
