Initial consultation
The orthodontist will examine your teeth and take X-rays to determine if you are a good candidate for fixed braces. They will also discuss your treatment options and explain the process to you.
Placement of braces
The orthodontist will place brackets on your teeth and attach them with dental cement. The brackets are connected with a wire that applies tension to your teeth, gradually moving them into the desired position.
Adjustments
The orthodontist will periodically adjust the wire and brackets to continue moving your teeth. These appointments typically occur every 4-8 weeks.
Wearing elastics
The orthodontist may also ask the patient to wear elastics (small rubber bands) to help move your teeth into the desired position.
Retention
After the braces are removed, the orthodontist will give the patient a retainer to wear to help keep the teeth in their new position.
Follow-up visits
The orthodontist will schedule regular follow-up visits to monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments.
